If you're going to be moving to college soon, you need to know a few Dos and Don'ts of packing for college. This information will help you to stay organized while you are moving to a new dorm, apartment or home.

Before you go about packing, be sure to gather your belongings. Start by listing all your items on a table so that you can easily locate them when you need to. Take along a friend or two to help you out during this process.

First, don'ts of packing for college include packing light and using plastic bags and boxes. If you need to pack a few items, it will not take much time to assemble them, and you'll need far fewer boxes and bags. However, if you plan to pack several small items, you'll want to consider using heavy, durable plastic containers.

Secondly, do not pack clothes that you will wear for your college students. If you do, you could find yourself with a huge mess on the floor at your dorm. And since you'll be packing for college, you'll probably want to wear your clothing in dorm rooms and other rooms while you're packing.

Thirdly, do not pack electronics and books that you plan to keep in your dorm room for college students. Most college dorms do not allow you to bring electronics, and if you have any that you plan to keep in your room for the college students, you may have to give them to the college students to keep. Also, you may have to give the college students a lock of your hair or put you in a closet for the college students.

Fourthly, do not pack large items such as mattresses, furniture, televisions, clothing and more. You'll want to leave room for other items that will be used throughout the day, and if you pack this type of furniture in an oversized box, you could end up having to rearrange your room after you pack the furniture. When you pack items such as furniture, you'll also need to take into consideration the weight of the furniture, the length of the furniture pieces and the distance that the furniture pieces will need to be placed in the room.

Fifthly, don't pack items in the dorm's closet. Dorms have a lot of clutter and are not the type of place to put all your small items, especially if you plan to keep them for a while, because they will take up space. A good idea for students who are moving to a dorm is to leave their shoes and other small items in their room, but not in the closet.

Sixthly, don't pack items in the dorm's closet. While your room's closet will need to be arranged, your room's closet will not need to be as organized as your room. If you have a room that will be used for storing books, you will need to keep them in the room's bookshelves instead of in the closet.
